What is up with Reef?

Okay so Reef has a cool layout, but what is up with the "reservations" required to get on the roof? Are there any other cool roof-top bars to visit in the area?

I am newbie from Portland, Oregon...where outdoor drinking is way of life. What is better than a roof-top for a drink?

Perry's gets my vote....mostly cause you don't feel like in a college bar.
    Local 16 ain't bad.

I like Perry's, but not the $11- martinis. I was searching for a happy hour last monday in A.M., finding none, ended up there. One drink later I was ready for a six pack with a random posse on the step of the Shamut (on Columbia). Much more affordable (I just graduated) - but lacking the lovely breeze and view on Perry's roof. Definitely good overall.
Local 16 you say...I have yet to check it. THX

There's also "Five" at 1214 18th NW. Three floors with a tropics-flavored roof bar. The roof bar is smallish, but on Wednesdays there's no cover and all cocktails etc. are $5, even top shelf.

Here's a fun thing coming up at Five:

        >> > 9/3: Marques Wyatt -- My favorite house DJ of all
        > time comes to DC
        >> > when I'm in the desert. Oh well. If you like to
        > dance, go!

May or may not be there next week, look for a guy in a LOUD Hawaiian shirt.

        Cheers!

The Straits of Malaya has a nice rooftop restaurant, and always has room. You get to watch all the common folk waiting and waiting and waiting for a table at Loriol.

While not a bar, per se, they will accomodate drinkers. The food is excellent; the only problem is that the menu is short and never changes.
