Introductions?

topic posted Sat, February 23, 2008 - 9:55 AM by  flaneuse
Hi folks,

I spend most of my time on Tribe communicating with folks on the west coast -- it would be fun to know some in my own neighborhood! There are 182 people subscribed to this tribe. Who's still here?

About me: I moved to DC in June 2006 after living in central NY state for many years. Spent my first year living in Dupont, then moved here to A-M last September, at Ontario & Lanier. I can still walk to work, which I like. This is a great 'hood!

And I'm psyched for Target to open!

    Hello!

I moved to DC in October, 2005 and lived on 16th & U for about a year and a half. Then I moved to Mt. Ranier for 6 months. Boring! Plus I had to drive everywhere. I moved to Adams Morgan about a month ago and I'm loving it!

Hi everyone! I moved to Adams Morgan from San Francisco in October. I am on Calvert near 18th. We should do some happy hours in Adams Morgan, I feel like even though I moved to this hip and happening area of town I am rarely in my hood.

Welcome! I'm actually in Mt. Pleasant, but do spend time in AM. There's the occasional happy hour called here on this list, so I would expect one before too much longer.

Concerning that Target: I have very mixed feelings about it. The Giant nearby has already caused two local Mt. P. groceries to close, and I fear the Target will have wider impact on the small shops here. I also expect traffic to become truly horrible, as that huge center is going in with zero changes to the nearby roads or traffic patterns. The thing I like about Mt. P and AM is that I can walk (well, used to be able to walk, before my favorite grocer closed) to just about everything I needed. I'll be surprised if most of the funky dollar stores survive long, and I'm concerned we'll just get chains moving in.

Enough of the gloom! Welcome again!

Yeah, I do sympathize with your misgivings about the Target megacomplex. (My background's in city planning and there are always so many sides to the issue). Typically I'm one who is against big-box stores, but a lot of that is due to their ugliness, cookie-cutter-ness, and the fact that usually they put a big ugly box and a parking lot on a former GREEN space. But I do think there's a place in the economy for larger, discount retailers, and what I like about this is that they're building in the center city near transit, so you don't need to get in a damn CAR to go there. And there are things that the little shops don't always stock -- bedsheets and bathtowels, for example.

Nice to "meet" some of you! I like the happy hour idea. I always thing the outside eating at the Adams Mill bar (or whatever it's called) looks very inviting in the warm weather...

    hey there tribe
i am living in mt pleasant for almost a year, back in d.c. after a 3 year hiatus to central america. would love to meet fellow tribers in the hood as well. anyone interested in a get together this weekend at a local bar?
also, regarding the target: heeeeeeeelll no am i happy bout it. this neighborhood has no need for a dcusa, as we have plenty of locally owned mom and pop stores providing for all. my apologies for the strength of this opinion, and by no need do i mean to offend, but i think i died a little (and so did the majority of the local community and business) when this megaplex opened. (although being a nurse i can't argue with the 4 dollar perscription drug list...)
that said, who's down for drinks? may i suggest the raven, my charming local dive bar?
