i am living in mt pleasant for almost a year, back in d.c. after a 3 year hiatus to central america. would love to meet fellow tribers in the hood as well. anyone interested in a get together this weekend at a local bar?
also, regarding the target: heeeeeeeelll no am i happy bout it. this neighborhood has no need for a dcusa, as we have plenty of locally owned mom and pop stores providing for all. my apologies for the strength of this opinion, and by no need do i mean to offend, but i think i died a little (and so did the majority of the local community and business) when this megaplex opened. (although being a nurse i can't argue with the 4 dollar perscription drug list...)
that said, who's down for drinks? may i suggest the raven, my charming local dive bar?

Yeah, I do sympathize with your misgivings about the Target megacomplex. (My background's in city planning and there are always so many sides to the issue). Typically I'm one who is against big-box stores, but a lot of that is due to their ugliness, cookie-cutter-ness, and the fact that usually they put a big ugly box and a parking lot on a former GREEN space. But I do think there's a place in the economy for larger, discount retailers, and what I like about this is that they're building in the center city near transit, so you don't need to get in a damn CAR to go there. And there are things that the little shops don't always stock -- bedsheets and bathtowels, for example.

Nice to "meet" some of you! I like the happy hour idea. I always thing the outside eating at the Adams Mill bar (or whatever it's called) looks very inviting in the warm weather...

Welcome! I'm actually in Mt. Pleasant, but do spend time in AM. There's the occasional happy hour called here on this list, so I would expect one before too much longer.

Concerning that Target: I have very mixed feelings about it. The Giant nearby has already caused two local Mt. P. groceries to close, and I fear the Target will have wider impact on the small shops here. I also expect traffic to become truly horrible, as that huge center is going in with zero changes to the nearby roads or traffic patterns. The thing I like about Mt. P and AM is that I can walk (well, used to be able to walk, before my favorite grocer closed) to just about everything I needed. I'll be surprised if most of the funky dollar stores survive long, and I'm concerned we'll just get chains moving in.

Enough of the gloom! Welcome again!
